I began home schooling in 1992 when my oldest was 5. I wanted to combine my loves: education and raising children. I have graduated two of my five children. I began using classical education in my home schooling after reading The Well Trained Mind. I currently have my youngest two children in Classical Conversations, which gives me and my children accountibility, structure, fellowship, and support in home educating in the classical methods. I also tutor a CC Challenge class of middle schoolers. My third child is beginning her last year of home schooling taking some dual enrollment classes at Gulf Coast Community College.
I have always looked for materials that teach students to think well and how to find answers for themselves. My goal is to train their brains to retain facts and use them wisely in living out their faith in God.
I have found that each of my children is different in their likes and learning preferences, but God has given them the ability to learn and succeed. We work together to learn. Our best years were the ones in which we could all learn the same subjects together. That is one of the joys of home schooling. We still discuss the subjects we are learning. I pray that I will never stop learning and my kids will enjoy the process of learning as well.
