Teaching Methods of Homeschooling

There are many different philosophies of homeschooling. Below is a list and brief explanation of a few of them. This list and explanations are not exhaustive but will give you a starting point in your research. Click on the method for more detail.

Charlotte Mason Method

A method of education in which children are taught as whole persons through a wide range of interesting living books, firsthand experiences, and good habits.

Classical Education Method

The Classical method of education is an approach to education that uses the Trivium (Latin for three roads) model for teaching.

Montessori Method

Montessori education was founded by Dr. Maria Montessori. She designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities for child directed learning.

Unit Studies

Unit Study is an extensive study of one topic that encompasses all or most subjects.

Traditional Approach

This method uses traditional textbooks.

Unschooling Approach

Generally, unschoolers are concerned with learning or becoming educated, not with 'doing school.' The focus is upon the choices made by each individual learner, and those choices can vary according to learning style and personality type.
